You can not put it on an external hard drive. FreeNAS is a complete operating system (FreeBSD) that is configured to turn a computer into a NAS. So you would need a dedicated machine to run the FreeNAS operating system, then you would need to install the FreeBSD drivers for your USB ports and drive. Then you would need to format the drive in a way that FreeBSD can use it (FAT is no good and NTFS is not natively supported in FreeBSD) next map a share on your USB drive using the FreeNAS interface. FreeNAS was designed to turn a computer into a NAS, you must start with a computer.
