The problem of

Mother Nature gave us lots of gifts, but a perfect acoustic space was not one of them!

Simply put, acoustic theory is very complex to analyze, unless your model and the room was designed by an acoustician world famous forever will be an uphill battle against the laws of Phisics. While a certain amount of audio filters, also known as room correction can help improve the audio performance, achieve a flat frequency response, promoting signal in certain frequencies, only resolves the question of whether the problems are not dependent on time (see below). Of course, the quality of its speakers, amplifiers and other devices on the issues of the audio chain, but ultimately triumph acoustic theories. Following this warning enough, let's look at what DSP can do for you.

Take for example the hi-fi system in a living room shown in The image below.

Many factors affect the quality of the audio system, such as:

• The window will not absorb the energy acoustic and probably reflect a large amount of high frequency energy left speaker
• The imperfect free field frequency response of your speaker system
• The room layout asymmetric affect the stereo field
• Or just the listening position by the couch. So close to the wall, the lowest frequency that experience more likely than it should call waves. All together, the end result is an acoustic space where imperfect even the best audio system Hi-Fi does not produce a flat frequency response.

How MiniDSP kits can you help?

So besides taking the walls, move the couch in the room 5 times or ability to change the color of your speaker cable, not some tricks that can help improve overall system performance. Digital audio processors like ours MiniDSP Kit is one of them. With its flexible configuration, which provide a low cost option to configure the audio filters, equalizers and monitoring the signal from a simple software interface. However, keep in mind that there a limit on the amount of digital processing of acoustic signals can resolve issues. In particular, equality is only going to solve amplitude related issues. While with modes other room and comb filtering (wave cancellation) issues that require either time-alignment or acoustic treatment.

MiniDSP What can do is offer a set of filters to easily improve the performance of your speaker system:
• Graphic Equalizer: This filter bank increase or decrease the signal at a specific frequency. Depending on the configuration of MiniDSP firmware, you can have 31 bands (also called 1 / 3 octave) or 15 Band (2 / 3 octave) are available. By increasing / damping of the signal at certain frequencies the loudspeaker equalization is the most common tuning system
• Parametric EQ: Like the graphic equalizer, but this time with only a limited number of bands of equalization that can be easily configured to better suit the needs of the application.
• Deadline: In order for speakers to produce constructive wave front and avoid, as much of comb filter effect as possible, time alignment of different speaker typically required. Delay blocks also come in handy digital crossover applications.

So to summarize this application note, flat frequency response of a system not going to go through the magic of a DSP (no matter what brand it is). However, what we can do our advice is to help improve equality of speakers driving / damping few specific frequencies of its premises + Combo driver may not be able to play.

Our kits are also the perfect fit when it comes to digital crossovers. With its small form factor, can easily place the plate inside the box of powered speakers. I hope this makes sense and send us an email if you have any comments to add.
